A mid-1960s IWC Automatic Date powered by the respected Calibre 8531 automatic movement, part of IWC’s celebrated Pellaton winding system era. Housed in a 34mm stainless steel case with acrylic crystal, this example stands out through its warm tropical dial ageing, giving the watch a softer and more characterful vintage appearance.
Why It’s Special
IWC’s Cal. 853 series remains highly regarded for its engineering quality and robust Pellaton winding system, helping establish the brand’s reputation for refined everyday automatics during the 1950s and 1960s. This example features attractive tropical ageing across the original sunburst dial, adding warmth and individuality without the heavier degradation seen on more compromised examples. An honest vintage piece with strong character and classic mid-century proportions.
Condition
Warm golden sunburst dial shows even tropical ageing with light spotting throughout, creating appealing vintage character while remaining balanced overall. Applied indices and handset appear correct with consistent ageing and no obvious mismatches. Acrylic crystal has been polished and presents well with minor residual surface marks. Stainless steel case appears previously polished but remains clean overall, with moderate softening to edges and light wear consistent with age. No major dents or structural issues observed. Caseback shows light tool marks consistent with prior servicing. Crown appears unsigned but period correct. Fitted on an aftermarket leather strap with aftermarket buckle.
Performance: Recently tested on timegrapher at +5 seconds per day. Rate performance remains strong for a vintage automatic.
