IWC’s Cal. 85x automatic movements are widely regarded for their durability and technical refinement, forming the backbone of the brand’s mid-century watches. The Cal. 8531 adds date functionality while maintaining the same engineering integrity. This example offers an accessible entry into vintage IWC collecting, with original dial, handset, and case, supported by a mechanically sound movement.

Condition

Original silver sunburst dial shows widespread spotting and patina consistent with age and historical moisture exposure; printing remains legible with no signs of redial, and applied baton indices and handset appear original with matching ageing. Acrylic crystal has been polished but retains visible surface wear and distortion at certain angles. Stainless steel case has been cleaned and lightly polished, with symmetrical lugs and overall solid structure, though edges show mild softening from prior work. Case-back brushing remains visible. Crown appears unsigned and may be a later replacement. Date wheel shows slight vertical misalignment within the window, with a faint trace of the previous date occasionally visible at the top.

Performance: Running accurately at around –2 seconds per day — evidence of an overhaul by an independent Japanese watchmaker prior to sale, supported by strong timegrapher results and overall presentation.
