IWC Automatic Date Cal. 8531 1693422 (1963–1965)

This mid-1960s IWC Automatic Date is a 34 mm stainless-steel dress watch powered by IWC calibre 8531. Its silver dial, applied baton markers, date display and acrylic crystal sit within a restrained case that places the focus on the movement and period-correct proportions.

Why It’s Special

Calibre 8531 belongs to IWC’s celebrated 85x family, developed around Albert Pellaton’s highly effective automatic-winding system. Introduced as an evolution of the 8521, the 8531 combined that robust architecture with a date mechanism and became a core mid-century IWC movement. This is the appeal of the watch: serious Schaffhausen engineering in a slim, unassuming dress-watch form.

Condition

Original silver sunburst dial shows widespread spotting and patina consistent with age and historical moisture exposure; printing remains legible with no signs of redial, and applied baton indices and handset appear original with matching ageing. Acrylic crystal has been polished but retains visible surface wear and distortion at certain angles. Stainless steel case has been cleaned and lightly polished, with symmetrical lugs and solid structure, though edges show mild softening from prior work. Case-back brushing remains visible. Crown appears unsigned and may be a later replacement. Date wheel shows slight vertical misalignment within the window, with a faint trace of the previous date occasionally visible at the top.

Performance

Running accurately at around –2 seconds per day – evidence of an overhaul by an independent Japanese watchmaker prior to sale, supported by strong timegrapher results and overall presentation.
